How can SERVPRO help deal with water damage at your Los Angeles eatery?

Having the help of professional restorers like SERVPRO to deal with water damage in your Los Angeles eatery can make a huge difference. Besides having years of experience, our IICRC certified techs have the unique advantage of approaching restoration from a scientific perspective.

SERVPRO techs use the thermodynamic properties of air to their advantage while restoring water damage to your Los Angeles property. We design a strategy that ensures fast drying speeds to minimize long-term damage. Humidity control, heat, and airflow are cornerstones of SERVPRO’s restoration plan.

SERVPRO techs apply science to restorative drying during water cleanup in Los Angeles properties

SERVPRO techs base their drying strategy for your Los Angeles property based on three laws of nature-

  • Wet goes to dry
  • Hot goes to cold
  • High pressure goes to low pressure

Thus, the main goal of the drying method is to reduce the time to get to the equilibrium state. In the early drying stages, when there is a lot of surface moisture, SERVPRO techs use high airflow to ramp up the drying rate. As the water evaporates, less and less surface moisture is present, and airflow becomes less important than the air's temperature. SERVPRO techs, thus, rely more on heating equipment during the later stages of the drying process.

Effectively using nature's equilibrium.

The goal for restorative drying is not to bring a building to the point of equilibrium where moisture, temperature, and pressure no longer move or change. Rather, the goal is to return wet structures and materials to a "dry" condition, so the restorer uses equilibrium to move excess moisture from wet materials.

Extraction and Drying Prevent Greater Water Damage to Your Highland Park Business

When water damage impacts a local business, it can be a compromising situation for the productivity of the building and the staff. Our SERVPRO team has a fast mitigation response for extraction and drying. We have hundreds of drying tools available to mobilize with our experienced Water Restoration Technicians (WRT) from our facility.

Extraction Devices to Remove Standing Water

There are many tools in our inventory that are ideal for water removal in Highland Park businesses. Even in large loss settings, we have an assortment of extraction devices to help. Our technicians rely on pumps, vacuums, and engine-driven extraction systems to quickly eliminate standing water on wood flooring.

Moisture Monitors Discover Damp Pockets

Understanding the success of drying and extraction measures is one of the beneficial uses of moisture meters and discovery tools. Caches of water damage can show where more significant losses and deterioration are possible. In an office lobby, the less tear-out and reconstruction necessary, the less that the production of the building is reduced. Some of the discovery devices in our inventory include:

  • Surface moisture meters
  • Probing moisture detection tools
  • Thermal imagery

Removing Water from Wood Plank Flooring

While our SERVPRO team intends to remove standing water before absorption becomes a concern, this does not always happen. We have to provide suitable moisture removal solutions to resolve trapped water in wood plank flooring before this water becomes chemically bound to cellulose. Once free water in these planks becomes bound, the composition changes, and the flooring distorts irreparably.

Water damage can compromise installed wood flooring, especially common tongue and groove plank floors typical with modern construction. Our SERVPRO of Highland Park team is always on call to help with fast and efficient mitigation and drying of these structural elements. Contact us today at (323) 255-1001.

We choose the right cleaning product based on the action desired, such as emulsifying, dissolving, oxidizing, bleaching, digesting, or changing pH. water leaking through ceiling tiles Regardless of which direction the leak in your building came from, team SERVPRO can help with technicians and equipment for the water cleanup job.

We Have Unique Strategies for Cleaning Up Water-Damaged Los Angeles Buildings Quickly

No two damage situations are the same, making it vital for our SERVPRO team to reach offices after water emergencies and evaluate their conditions and needs. Many initial actions will be required to improve the working conditions and prevent additional harm, including:

  • Water removal services
  • Content relocation
  • Controlled demolition
  • Air scrubbing

What Can Creating a Staging Area Do?

When approaching water cleanup in Los Angeles office buildings, it is important to provide conditions that promote efficient cleaning and drying. In many water damage situations, cross-contamination and migrating moisture threats are high, making it vital to establish staging areas around work sites for easy access and storing equipment until it is needed. Not only does this provide direct and efficient access, but it actively prevents cross-contamination and moisture tracking to the rest of the building.

Do Containment Measures Help the Business?

Containment is one of the many initial actions that our team can take to prevent the spread and severity of water damage and threatening circumstances that can result. Physical barriers are often the most direct approach, constructing a framework when necessary to accompany polypropylene sheeting.

Knowing how to help your business quickly after water damage can prevent unnecessary wear and harm. As leading water restoration specialists, our SERVPRO of Highland Park team is available 24/7 to help at (323) 255-1001.

  • Because smoke residue bonds with surfaces on contact, materials and porous surfaces quickly absorb it. We can use a combination of wet and dry cleaning methods to lift residue from affected surfaces. When the wrong method or equipment gets used, it can make the damage worse.

For any level of fire damage, SERVPRO of Highland Park is the team you need on your side. Call us 24/7 for emergency water & fire damage restorations at (323) 255-1001.

Where Can I Find Water Mitigation Near Me? – It’s a Question Commercial Facilities Ask Often

The City of Angels began in 1542 when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the area for Spain. Thus, began a long Spanish influence, which can still be seen today. On September 4, 1781, Los Angeles was officially established. It remained under Spanish rule until 1821 when it became part of Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848 it became part of the United States, with the rest of California. Los Angeles has a rich and colorful history. Some of the highlights include:

  • Settled by the Tongva and Chumash tribes
  • Mission San Gabriel Archangel is the first mission
  • Became a municipality on April 4, 1850
  • In the 1890s, oil was discovered, leading to rapid growth
  • Los Angeles Aqueduct was completed in 1913 to bring in water.
  • Railroads arrived in 1876 with the completion of the transcontinental Southern Pacific Line.
  • Hollywood merged into Los Angeles in 1910.
  • By 1921, over 80% of the world’s film industry resided in LA
  • Hosted the Summer Olympics in 1932 & 1984
  • A major manufacturing city during WWII

It is a huge sprawling city that invites both residents and visitors to explore all the many things there are to see and do.

Must-See & Do in Los Angeles

Like many cities, local folk often do not spend time on local attractions. Which is a shame because L.A. abounds with wonderful sights and sounds. Some of the places no one should miss include:

  • Space Shuttle Endeavour
  • Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier
  • Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
  • Universal Studios
  • Hollywood Sign
  • Walt Disney Concert Hall
  • Griffith Observatory
  • Grand Central Market
  • Dodger Stadium
  • The Hollyhock House - a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Rodeo Drive

1994 Northridge Earthquake

On January 17, 1994, residents of the San Fernando Valley woke early morning to a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. While the quake lasted less than thirty seconds, the results were devastating. Its peak ground acceleration was the highest ever recorded on instruments in a city in North America. The peak ground velocity was the fastest ever recorded. Disaster can strike at any time and hit hard enough and fast enough; there is little time to react.

After the main earthquake, thousands of aftershocks were felt. 57 people died in the quake, and over 8,700 injuries were recorded. The property damage was estimated anywhere from $13 billion to $50 billion. The damage spread up to 85 miles from the epicenter. It would go down in history as one of the most expensive national disasters in our history.

Disasters Impact Businesses

Many homes were lost or had structural damage bad enough to prevent families from living in them. Commercial buildings were also destroyed or damaged. Some were able to remain closed for days after the earthquake, but others were not so lucky. It took months, and in some situations, years to rebuild the infrastructures.

Commuting to Los Angeles for work was lengthened due to the damage to highways and roads. Many businesses were forced to relocate while their buildings were being repaired, and workers took up temporary shelter near places of work. Today companies like SERVPRO play a significant role in building restoration when disaster strikes.

When Floodwaters Come Raging Through

90% of all flooding comes from natural disasters, and it was no different during the Northridge Earthquake. The flooding began at 4:30 AM, as did fires. By 6:50 AM, reports of hundreds of water mains and gas mains roll in. Balboa Boulevard in the Granada Hills region of Los Angeles was flooded as water came pouring out of a burst water main. Gas leaks and sparking electrical wires caused many businesses and homes to go up in flames. These were flooded with water from firefighting efforts. The damage to businesses from flooding includes:

  • Weakened structural elements
  • Porous materials such as drywall and carpet absorb water rapidly
  • Floodwater is highly contaminated and is a health risk
  • Mold can develop quickly
  • Food items are contaminated
  • Businesses close
  • Loss of revenue

When Disaster Strikes

Los Angeles has been home to several major national disasters since the early 1990s. For several months California has been fighting wildfires that have put businesses and homes at risk. But the city perseveres, rebuilds, and moves on.

As L.A. residents, SERVPRO team members understand the hardship that can come when a disaster is thrown in your path. You need your business up and running. Our hearts go out to anyone impacted by flooding or fire. That’s why we are here to help.

How SERVPRO Helps Local Businesses

Does Business Insurance Cover Fire?

10/8/2020 (Permalink)

"Insurance Policy" SERVPRO helps with every step after your business has experienced a fire. Call us today at (323) 255-1001.

SERVPRO Can Work with your Policy Limits to Restore Commercial Fire Damage at your Los Angeles Business Premises.

Can policy limitations affect commercial restoration?

When a fire occurs, numerous tasks need to take place to get your Los Angeles business back to its preloss condition. Insurance policies typically have limitations on mitigation, restoration, and reconstruction. SERVPRO has experience working within the constraints of a business insurance policy. Our ethos is to restore through cleaning and restoration, which typically keeps the cost of a claim low compared to replacing large amounts of its structure or contents. We recognize how important it is for your business to recover quickly without unnecessary expense. As such, our crew chiefs can communicate with you and your insurance adjuster regarding policy limits when producing the estimate and required services.

How long does it take to produce a fire restoration estimate?

As a commercial fire damage restoration service in Los Angeles, we are not directly responsible for producing the final estimate. However, our technicians contact an adjuster with an initial verbal estimate of damage and costs within eight business hours. A verbal appraisal is typically produced once crew chiefs have completed inspection of the premises, divided debris into salvageable and non-salvageable, and put together a solid strategy for returning the business premises to its preloss condition. A verbal estimate is not set in stone, and there may be some negotiation concerning your insurance policy when in conversation with an adjuster. SERVPRO keeps business clients informed throughout the restoration of the business but can also act on their initiative to allow you to concentrate on your next steps.

What are the contents of a verbal fire damage estimate?

An inventory of salvageable and non-salvageable items from the initial inspection of the fire loss site

Personal concerns or consternation from the business regarding restoration. For example, specialty cleaning tasks, document drying, and electronics.

Storage of business property during restoration as well as the overall schedule of service until completion

How are estimates produced for a commercial fire insurance policy?

We aim to produce an accurate estimate for our business clients, so a crew chief's initial inspection involves a test kit. Test kits are an active and authentic way of assessing the cleanability of items. We may take measurements from smoke residues, soots, or soiling and note the material of impacted surfaces. It is common for our production technicians to apply a small amount of cleaning product to a surface to test whether it is cleanable. When pre-testing damages in commercial premises, our goal is to find out what materials need replacing and what are restorable. Generally speaking, restoration is quicker and less expensive than replacing. Kitchen appliances in a restaurant, for example, may be restorable by using solvents to remove soot and smoke residues instead of replacing the whole machine, which may be restricted under your policy limits.

What is a fire damage test kit made up from?

Personal protective equipment (PPE) which may include respirators, gloves, and eyewear

Light agitation tools like steel wool, scrapers, dry cleaning sponges, and brushes

Warning equipment including hazard tapes, tags, markers, and labels

pH paper along with spray bottles of light soot and spot cleaning agents

What is the value of scoping and estimating in fire-damaged commercial premises?

The tasks of scoping and estimating in your Los Angeles business are two separate entities. When scoping, SERVPRO technicians evaluate the extent of damage that a fire causes and details any losses. We can also note down the necessary cleaning actions to restore some or all of the property. An estimate is a written version of the restoration service that details costs. Your insurance adjuster is responsible for the written assessment, but these can help a business owner to understand and file information relating to your claim. You may also opt to add on services for specific remedies that are not covered in your policy. A typical specialist service may include artwork restoration or document recovery, which could help return your business to its preloss condition.

Who are commercial property restoration estimates produced for?

The insurance adjuster that handles the claim and dispersal of payment for services in your premises to return it to its normal condition

The policyholder who can maintain and reference the estimate throughout the restoration service as well as when making their claim

SERVPRO technicians use estimates as guidance for performing restoration within the limits of your insurance policy

Using a company with experience working with commercial insurance adjusters and policies can help ensure you avoid hidden costs. Contact SERVPRO of Highland Park at (323) 255-1001 today.

How Can I Prepare My Shop for Storm Damage Ahead of Time?

9/4/2020 (Permalink)

Storm clouds With SERVPRO's Emergency Ready Program (ERP), We can help your Business be better prepared for unexpected events that could occur.

Highland Park Businesses Can Prepare for Disaster with SERVPRO’s Emergency READY Program (ERP).

Highland Park is a historically rich town with an incredible diversity of ethnic groups and cultures. When in the area, you will want to stop in Galco’s Soda Pop Stop and grab a drink. It is a store that has been locally owned and operated for over 100 years. Like any town or city, Highland Park is also prone to storms that can cause severe damage to the homes and businesses in the area.

What Can ERP Do For My Shop?

Flash floods can surge through a town at rapid speeds sending vast amounts of water surging through local businesses. Disasters like this are the reason 50% of all commercial enterprises do not recover when impacted. Those that do survive a major catastrophe have a response plan in place. The Emergency READY program can provide support for your business if you ever have to deal with flood damage in Highland Park.

What are the Benefits of ERP?

Floods, fire, and other disasters can occur at any time, impacting your business and your community. By being prepared in advance, you can lessen the impact. SERVPRO’s ERP can help with that in several ways. Some of the benefits include:

  • Building trust – your clients and employees know you are prepared if something serious happens. You are looking after their interests.
  • Comprehensive information resource – all your essential information in one location.
  • Minimize problems – less business interruption and loss of revenue.
  • Timely mitigation – reduces secondary damage, saves you time and money, less downtime for cleanup and restoration.

Knowing whom to call, what to do, and what to expect when disaster strikes is vital to fast mitigation.

Setting Up Your Emergency READY Profile

The purpose of the ERP system is to shorten the SERVPRO response time when your shop places an emergency call. The profile setup is a user-friendly, web-based interface. You input the required information, which is then available to our professional teams and allows us to get moving quicker. The faster we arrive and begin the flood damage mitigation started, the sooner you are operating at normal capacity.

Creating a company profile is the first step. The profile gets personalized with your company’s pertinent information. We have marketing representatives that can assist you with this if needed. We then work directly with your shop if an emergency, such as flooding, happens. All your business needs, any individual circumstances, and your emergency contacts are listed. There is no need to take the time to provide this information when you call. It is all at SERVPRO’s fingertips.

Are You Prepared?

If you are a business owner, you should have a contingency plan in place. Every solid plan has three elements:

  • Incident response
  • Disaster recovery
  • Business continuity

Our ERP system is not a comprehensive contingency plan. We provide two of the three components, incident response and disaster recovery. Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified technicians are well-trained to mitigate any flood damage, but our goal is to help you before anything occurs. ERP is an investment in your shop’s future well-being.

More Reasons to Consider ERP

If you own or manage multiple companies, the ERP system allows you to create a profile for each one. In a severe flooding situation, the information is available, so we know just what to do and where to go for each business. Contact management can also be organized and stored within our system. Your insurance information, utilities, suppliers, customers, and other essential contacts are available to you if you are unable to access that information because of the situation. Contact efficiency is critical in any type of disaster. Further benefits include:

  • Only pertinent information required for emergencies is stored. No unnecessary overload of info.
  • No-cost assessment of your shop.
  • Provides the information on who can authorize cleanup work to begin.
  • Facility details are kept, such as where shut-off valves are located and priority areas.
  • Establishes SERVPRO of Highland Park as your emergency disaster restoration service provider.

The ERP readiness plan allows our technicians to arrive promptly at the scene to provide emergency mitigation and get a restoration plan in place FAST. Our team already has the needed information for work approval, the shop’s layout, and the content. This cuts the initial response time drastically. Cleanup, repair, and restoration begin sooner as a result. This means your shop can be up and running much sooner than if you had no plan in place.

Do not let your business go unprotected should a storm sweep through the area bringing extensive flood damage with them. Contact SERVPRO of Highland Park at (323) 255-1001 and let us show you what ERP can do for your shop. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster

Even if you have a maintenance crew onsite, you need the help of trained water restoration technicians (WRT) that arrive with industrial strength equipment and specialized techniques to achieve the best results.

    •    Wallpaper that tears away from the walls

How Should You Handle Water Damage from the Second Floor of Your Los Angeles Hotel?

4/24/2020 (Permalink)

"Hotel" Our professionals have state of the art equipment to clean up and restore your hotel so your customers can return safely after a water incident.

Bring in The Professionals at SERVPRO With the Tools and Experience to Better Assist You.

Guests are the lifeblood of your 4-Star Los Angeles hotel, but these needed guests can also be a costly and damaging element to your business. When accidents or negligent activities occur in the upper rooms of your building, like overflowing sinks or clean water toilet threats, the resulting immense volume of water can penetrate flooring systems. When interior flooding moves beyond subflooring, it can get into areas like the main lobby beneath that room.

As much as you might want this water damage in your Los Angeles hotel to get resolved quickly, penetration into lower levels of the building can indicate a need for controlled demolition and reconstruction on top of plumbing repairs, drying, and extraction. In each of these areas, our qualified SERVPRO team can help. We have experienced water restoration technicians and in-house contractors that can oversee both controlled demolition and the later build back that the property needs.

To limit the stress and hazards to your guests, areas of your facility can get sectioned off with containment barriers and temporary construction solutions. These barriers eliminate foot traffic underneath openings in the floor where removed flooring systems and ceiling materials used to be.

Drying out damp areas of your hotel room where the problem originated involves the use of centrifugal air movers positioned at saturated materials. While tile flooring is typically less affected by standing water, the movement of this water damage to the main body of the room can expose trim, carpeting, and wood subflooring to direct moisture damage. Within the drying zone established by containment barriers, our SERVPRO professionals can regulate temperature, humidity, and airflow to maximize drying of materials that do not require removal and replacement.

Some water loss incidents can be devastating for your business, and if not treated quickly, can be equally destructive to your status as a 4-star accommodation. From drying and extraction to demolition and build back, our SERVPRO of Highland Park team can help you to make these losses "Like it never even happened." Give us a call today at (323) 255-1001.

Cleaning Up a Restaurant during the Holidays

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

When water affects a theater the show must go on. The show and the guests are looking forward to the event.  Tickets have been sold and other shows are depending on the schedule. The event can not be changed.

To keep the show on track and guests not knowing that there was a problem our crews set up equipment and then took it down just a few hours before the show and then reset it right after the show was over each night. This was very labor intensive as there was lots of equipment to set up and take down in a short amount of time to be able to dry the structure properly but we understand that the show must go on. Our employees worked long hours and at odd times to make sure that the guests never experienced any hiccups when coming to experience the show.  We work hard to make it "Like it never even happened" during and after the dry out process.  When you see these green trucks you know that help has arrived and you can depend on us. The Show Must and Will Go On!

An apartment lobby is shown to be flooded Category 2 Water

A sewage backup is an emergency problem that can pose a health risk or severe illness.  While sewage damage will be expensive to clean up, it must never be done yourself. There are many dangerous bacteria and odors that can be left without proper cleaning.

Sewage water can contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses.  Our professionals use advanced equipment and products that remove the water and contaminates.  SERVPRO offers content cleaning on site or at our warehouse for your personal belongings that have been contaminated as well.

During a heavy rain it is common to have a septic backup.  Significant rainfall can flood the ground leaving it saturated making it impossible for water to flow out of the septic tank.  While some cases of sewage backups are not very severe because they are noticed right away, others can go untreated for days.

If necessary to have contact with the water protective measures should be taken.  A facemask, rubber boots, gloves and eyewear should be worn at all times to avoid contact. Opening windows to allow fresh air to circulate can help with the odor.  Highly porous materials with low cost or replacement value, such as carpet cushion, carpet, cardboard, wicker, and straw, should be removed and discarded as soon as possible. Other materials, such as saturated mattresses and cloth upholstery, regardless of value, cannot be restored and should be discarded. If disposal is necessary, these materials should be bagged in plastic for removal to a proper disposal site. Our professionals at SERVPRO remove and dispose of all contaminated material when deemed necessary.

If you suspect your sewage damage is due to a pipe burst then all water appliances should not be in use. Using water appliances will only add more pressure and water to the already existing damage.   Turn off the water in your home if the water valve is visible and you can access it to prevent further damage.  Prevent cross contamination by not going in or around the sewage water and tracking it to other rooms in the home or office.

There are 3 types of contaminated water:

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or a leaking faucet

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine,  but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

If you have experienced any type of water damage, call SERVPRO of Highland Park.  We are a 24 hour 7 days a week service.  We are here to safely restore your home or business.
