Mitigating Flood Damage In Los Angeles

Flooded Room We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Mitigating Flood Damage Protects Your Family, Possessions, and Belongings in Los Angeles but Can be Risky Work

After a flood invades your residential property in Los Angeles, the entire interior becomes damp. While the floor takes the worst part of the damage, the water begins to evaporate soon after arriving, saturating the air with water vapor. Because wet goes to dry, it continually spreads to other areas, including those where your family placed belongings for safekeeping.

After a flood takes over your neighborhood in Los Angeles, starting flood damage mitigation work as soon as possible can protect everything currently undamaged from harm. An early beginning gives your family many benefits, as well, besides keeping the damage from worsening.

SERVPRO’s technicians study the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards, as well as receive ongoing in-house training, and we are all committed to helping our customers and our community, as well, live in safe and sturdy homes, including after a disaster. Flooding leaves homes saturated, full of invasive pathogens capable of causing undesirable health effects, with untold destruction of the interior structure. Our training prepares us for such work, and our dedication to providing excellent service means our customers can rely on us.

Mitigating a house of flood damage can be dirty work, often involving buckets, shovels, and the removal of heavy, bulky, and soaking-wet materials. Because of the likelihood of coming into contact with hazards, we always wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including full suits, gloves, boots, face masks, and even respirators. These items protect us from sharp objects that can cut or puncture the skin, germs that can cause health effects, and microscopic particles in the air.

Instead of attempting to perform flood damage mitigation yourself and putting your health and safety on the line, SERVPRO is ready to do the hard work for you. During a disaster like this, the stress caused by disruption of your normal activities, worry about pets, belongings, and the future, as well as the displacement of your family, can make performing the job all that more difficult.

You can rely on our mitigation and restoration expertise, knowledge of local building codes, and creativity in making things “Like it never even happened.” SERVPRO of Highland Park is always near neighboring areas, including Montecito Heights, CA, Lincoln Heights, CA, and Monterey Hills, CA. Call our 24-hour services line, (323) 255-1001, for service any day of the year.

How can SERVPRO techs prevent Los Angeles homes from aftermath flood damage?

Restoration of flood damage to your Los Angeles home involves the careful and judicious use of certain professional-grade equipment. The restorers work hard to create conditions that facilitate the evaporation of trapped moisture from the surfaces.

SERVPRO techs manipulate the humidity, airflow, and temperature while restoring flood damage to your Los Angeles home using sophisticated equipment. Dehumidifiers can remove water vapor from the air, reducing the humidity ratio and accelerating the drying rate. SERVPRO techs also use heating equipment to increase the temperature of the air, which draws more moisture from wet surfaces.

What is the role of air movers during flood restoration of your Los Angeles home?

Air movers are large pieces of equipment that SERVPRO techs use to enhance the evaporation at the surface level. As water evaporates from any wet material, the surface gets surrounded by a boundary layer of humid, cold air. The presence of such a boundary layer reduces the drying rate significantly.

Air movers replace this thick, moisture-rich layer with warmer and drier air. The result is an increased rate of evaporation. SERVPRO techs use the following two types of air movers

  • Centrifugal: These are perfect if the techs need to direct air at a high velocity to a specific point.
  • Axial: Although the air velocity of these movers is not high, they can cover a larger area of the affected material.

How are air movers rated?

Air movers are typically rated by a CFM unit (Cubic Feet per Minute). It is the volume of air that the equipment can produce per minute. Thus, a higher CFM value indicates more air is being moved over the wet surfaces.

SERVPRO Flood Damage Mitigation Remediates Floodwater, Waste, Chemical Residues, and Debris

While floodwater brings a plethora of problems from the moisture exposure alone, one of the most overlooked aspects of flooding, before it occurs, is the debris it brings with it. This debris can make home cleanup inadvisable for homeowners looking for a DIY solution to their Highland Park flooding woes.

Highland Park SERVPRO technicians provide Highland Park homes with 24/7 flood cleanup and build-back services, including drywall repair, flooring replacement, and other necessary structural repairs. SERVPRO mitigates both water and flood debris in structural materials as well as contents.

Types of Floodwater Debris

Ground floods and other storm-related damages introduce a variety of unwanted debris into a property. While materials like sandbags can protect against water, they can still be contaminated by flood debris. According to FEMA Debris Management Planning materials, types of flooding debris can include:

  • Vegetation such as tree stumps, branches, and foliage
  • Utility system debris like cables, poles,
  • Household hazardous waste (HHW), which can include paints, cleaners, pesticides, solvents, and petroleum products
  • Infectious waste, which can cause infections in humans, consists of sewage, animal waste, blood, medical and pathological waste, and discarded sharp items like syringes.
  • Silt, sand, and mud are among the most common materials that infiltrate a home during a flood

SERVPRO uses personal protective equipment (PPE) while extracting floodwater and related debris and treats surfaces with EPA-registered biocides to minimize the risk of contamination from bacteria or fungi. SERVPRO mold remediation also remediates potential microbial growth and associated odors, which can start growing in a home in as little as 24 hours after floodwater exposure.

Homeowners seeking a “Like it never even happened,” cleanup crew can call SERVPRO of Highland Park at (323) 255-1001.

Areas of a Los Angeles Home That Get Cleaned After Flash Flooding

10/5/2021 (Permalink)

thunderstorm warning sign against dark background Flooding occurs with little warning, and the water can bring contaminants into your home. SERVPRO has the tools to safely remove the water.

Restoring Los Angeles Properties After Flooding Requires a Focus on Several Damaged Areas

One of the most destructive forces that properties in this area can face is flash flooding. The rapid pace of this surging water can overwhelm a property quickly. We have mitigation solutions that can begin as soon as we arrive to remove moisture and start the content protection, cleaning, and restoration.

Removing Standing Water in the House

Flood damage for Los Angeles homes immediately requires extraction and water removal solutions to get the property back towards the preloss condition. Pumps and vacuums both play a vital role in this effort and can eliminate the standing water and pooling collecting on damaged flooring.

Clearing Bulk Materials and Debris

Debris and bulk material removal can be one of the initial actions necessary to prevent a flooding situation from getting worse. Natural flooding with the force of flash floods can provide a violent surge with solids that must also get removed and addressed along with the standing water. Some of the common elements to clean up include:

  • Mud
  • Silt
  • Organic matter
  • Insects/Animals
  • Debris

Antimicrobial and Disinfection Cleaning

Flash floods carry possible contaminants, as there is no denying the potential substances and hazards encountered as the water reaches a residence. The thorough cleaning of the property targets two primary hurdles: health-hazardous effects and mold growth. We have multiple cleaning products in our inventory to help in both of these areas.

There is no mistaking the raw, destructive force of nature during events like flash flooding. As rapidly as these events can overwhelm a property, many look to our SERVPRO of Highland Park team for effective solutions to flood cleanup. We are available 24/7 at (323) 255-1001.

SERVPRO is a Premier Provider of Storm Flood Damage Repair in Los Angeles

A storm can cause sudden and dangerous flooding that can be devastating to your property. However, with the right precautions, you can reduce the destruction of your property. Unfortunately, after a flooding incident, the average homeowner cannot eliminate all the moisture and water in flooring, walls, ceilings, and other places. This kind of water can lead to the spread of bacteria, warped wood, structural damage, and odor.

Enlisting the services of biohazard cleaning companies such as SERVPRO to handle the storm flood damage in your Los Angeles residence is essential. All flood remediation jobs are unique, and they require different removal methods and techniques. Flood removal might appear to be straightforward, but they are usually are secondary problems that our technicians look out for. The essential thing is following the appropriate water removal steps. Our SERVPRO restorers can assess the destruction in your home and then take the following steps:

  • Eliminate the standing water and humidity.
  • Remove water-logged materials
  • Dry the affected area
  • Dehumidify the area
  • Disinfect the HVAC system

Our SERVPRO team usually comes up with a plan of action based on the magnitude of the flood damage. If restoring contents is cheaper than replacing them, we can take them to our facilities for thorough cleaning and restoration.

Floodwater is often contaminated, and for that reason, we perform cleaning that involves sanitizing to eliminate the risk of bacterial growth and rid the area of foul smells. We use EPA-registered broad-spectrum disinfectants and apply them to all the affected surfaces and materials. We can apply a second treatment with biocides because they are more effective whenever they contact microorganisms on clean surfaces. Our SERVPRO team allows enough dwell time depending on the product’s label and maintains the correct pH and temperature levels.

SERVPRO of Highland Park is a reputed flood damage repair firm with advanced equipment to speed up the restoration process. Call us anytime at (323) 255-1001 for effective flood damage restoration.

How Can Monitoring Moisture Protect Flooded Highland Park Homes?

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

a woman standing on a house floating in the water Flooding can happen very quickly and become extensive. React just as fast with a call to SERVPRO for water removal and remediation services.

Our Drying Strategies After Flood Damage Include Thorough Monitoring of Highland Park Properties

Flooding is not an uncommon scenario for area homes or commercial structures with severe weather systems affecting the region. Post-flood cleaning and restoration should be left to professionals like our SERVPRO team to ensure no damage gets overlooked.

How Does Moisture Evaluation and Monitoring Work?

When flood damage in Highland Park homes exists, the movement and migration of water can be substantial. As the property seeks an equilibrium for humidity and moisture content, many wall systems, flooring, and ceiling materials can become affected. Identifying where moisture pockets exist can ensure that the right drying measures are taken to remove damp areas. Some of the tools used for this include:

  • Hygrometers
  • Probing moisture detectors
  • Infrared/thermal cameras

Consequences of Missed Moisture Pockets

As many area residents have found with some of the less regulated or experienced restoration teams, failing to remove the full extent of the moisture damage in the house can result in secondary effects like mold growth. Microbial threats pose risks of health effects and structural deterioration. Our commitment to moisture monitoring allows us to be confident in walking away from a completed job.

When flood damage threatens your home, our SERVPRO of Highland Park team can help clean and restore the damage. We offer peace of mind in a stressful situation with complete restoration solutions. Give us a call today at (323) 255-1001.

SERVPRO Acts Quickly to Address Flood Damage to Help Highland Park Residents After Heavy Rains

As a Highland Park homeowner, you should prepare for everything. However, even when you have a storm preparedness plan in place, you may get overwhelmed when you notice a leaking roof from storms or groundwater coming into your home. Flood restoration by skilled technicians at SERVPRO is the best way to ensure your home gets back to pre-storm conditions, “Like it never even happened.”

Flood damage in Highland Park can be tricky for anyone who tries to take the DIY route. SERVPRO wants property owners to know that there are many types of water damage from flooding that you could encounter, and we know how to tackle each one.

  • Drywall Damage: Saturated drywall calls for removable as the material is no longer salvageable. In some instances, we will make flood cuts just above the waterline, remove the damaged portion, and replace them with brand-new drywall.
  • Foundational Damage: In some flood events, a home’s foundation might take on damage as the soil under it begins to swell or shift after flood water saturation. This can lead to unsettled window and door frames, uneven flooring, and foundation cracks.
  • Furniture Damage: Upholstered items and mattresses are very vulnerable to flood damage and mold growth. While saturated porous materials must get replaced, metal and wood furniture can usually be salvaged using precise, proven methods.
  • Insulation Damage: Wall insulation that gets soaked through must get addressed so that mold does not develop. Some insulation types are non-absorbent, so our team can make assessments and decisions as we work through the flood restoration job.

SERVPRO Helps The Local Community With Flood Damage Repairs

Los Angeles is a large, iconic, and bustling city of nearly four million people. Los Angeles is known for its arts and culture, including, of course, Hollywood and the rich history of the silver screen. Los Angeles has an unusually high number of museums per capita, a thriving sports culture, and a wealth of theater and arts programs.

With so much to see and do, Los Angeles is the perfect vacation spot. If you are stuck where to begin exploring the city, you might like to start with a trip to Venice Beach.

Enjoy The Fresh Air and Laid Back Vibes by the Beach

Venice is a popular area of Los Angeles that used to be a town in its own right. The Hollywood connections are strong here, too – the area partly influenced the design in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet movie.

Venice has a long history. Abbot Kinney founded the town in 1906 as a seaside resort. Kinney was a conservationist and developer, and his Venice development garnered a lot of attention. The series of canals, based on Venice, Italy, drew plenty of visitors. Kinney even brought in gondolas and gondoliers from Italy for an authentic experience. Although these days they are simply known as “the canals,” the waterways once had dramatic names such as Venus, Aldebaran, Cabrillo, Comet, and Lion. The addition of ornate businesses, an amusement pier, and an ocean aquarium made Venice so famous that it became known as “The Coney Island of the Pacific.”

Today, Venice is an artsy and bohemian area, where you can watch street performers, enjoy street food, or have your fortune told as you wander its boulevards. Some must-see Venice stops include:

  • Venice Public Art Walls have been around since 1961. Over the years, many famous graffiti artists have made use of the walls. The council restored the walls in 2000, and they provide a place for budding artists to practice and for experienced artists to paint legally.
  • Muscle Beach Gym is an outdoor gym once frequented by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The gym holds regular events and displays, or if you want to get fit, you can purchase a day pass for just $10.
  • The Venice Canals provide a lovely tranquil walk beside calming waters, with quaint pedestrian bridges and beautiful waterside homes. Go at the right time of year, and you might even spot some ducklings.
  • Small World Books is a must for any book lover. This oasis of literary calm has an impressive range of independent and hard-to-find books, plus a selection dedicated to local authors.

SERVPRO Helps With Repairs After Flood Damage

Some areas of Los Angeles are unfortunately prone to floods. In 1938, a flash flood claimed 115 lives and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and caused $78 million of damage.

If you are dealing with a flood’s aftermath, you do not want to liaise with lots of different contractors. That is why it is best to call SERVPRO. We can oversee repairs such as:

  • Fixing holes in the roof.
  • Replacing flood-damaged wallpaper and carpets.
  • Removing damaged drywall or insulation.
  • Rebuilding structural elements.

If our team does not have the specific expertise required, we will bring in contractors. Contractors are held to the same high standards as our permanent staff, so you know your home is in good hands.

Why Do the Transition Phases of Water Matter While Drying in Highland Park?

Drying Materials Within Your Highland Park Home Involves a Scientific Process
It is essential to understand that drying your Highland Park home does not merely mean water extraction. Although the use of professional extraction equipment such as truck-mounted and portable extractors is critical, drying consists of so much more than just removing water from your home. To adequately dry the materials in your home, our trained technicians need to transform residual liquid water into water vapor.

Is Condensation After a Flood Dangerous?
SERVPRO Mitigates Damages Caused by Excess Moisture
After removing excess water from flood damage in Highland Park, it is crucial to keep your home free of excess moisture because it can cause secondary damage, such as mold growth and warped surfaces. Excess water in a flood-damaged environment is especially concerning because floodwater, according to the EPA S500 standard, is contaminated since it traveled over the ground, potentially coming into contact with harmful microbes. After a flood, condensation is common because warm air from the outside meets the colder air inside, causing water vapor to turn into liquid throughout your home. The moment when condensation begins is called the dew point, indicating the relative humidity (RH) in your home is 100%.

What is the Relationship Between Condensation and Evaporation?
    •    Condensation is when water vapor becomes liquid when it reaches its dew point.
    •    Evaporation is when water in liquid form turns to vapor.
    •    Warm, dry air encourages evaporation, while cool, dense air encourages condensation.

What are the Other Two Processes in Phases of Water Transition?
    •    Melting: Solid turns to liquid. For instance, when the snow melts in spring, it may cause a river to overflow and flood nearby areas.
    •    Sublimation: When solids turn directly into vapor. An example of this is "dry ice." Solid Dioxide turns instantly into vapor. Snow can also sublime directly into water vapor, skipping the liquid stage.

Dry Heat and Damage of Wildfire Season Increases the Risk of Severe Flood Damage in Highland Park -- Line Up the Experts from SERVPRO for a Successful Outcome

The extremes of wildfires and torrential rains make for catastrophic results when heavy rain falls on burned over landscapes. Late summer and fall fires set up Highland Park homeowners for concern and potentially damaging consequences when winter precipitation ramps up.

How Does Wildfire Damage Increase the Severity of Flooding When the Rains Come?
Flood damage in Highland Park often includes overland flows from the nearby steep, erosion-prone mountain watershed that feeds the Arroyo Seco flowing to the south of the community. When protective trees, brush, and other vegetation burns completely, overland flooding features increased mud and silt, exposing homes to mudslides as well as water.

What Can I Expect on the Flood Damage Mitigation and Remediation Agenda When Professional Crews Arrive?
SERVPRO always stocks a robust inventory of tools, commercial-grade extraction and drying equipment, and proprietary cleaning and disinfecting equipment in our service vehicles. As our project manager assesses safety hazards and lists preliminary damage for job planning, crew members begin to perform emergency services:

    •    Secure exterior storm harm, including compromised roofs, broken windows and doors, and damaged siding
    •    Shovel dirt and debris out of flooded spaces, clearing the way for trash pumps to extract deeper water
    •    Operate truck-mounted extractors, powered by onboard generators to avoid delays if electricity is disconnected
    •    Contain contaminated water and debris for disposal according to local hazardous-waste regulations
    •    Clean and disinfect soiled surfaces with EPA-registered products
    •    Use air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to dry out affected spaces

The well-trained and equipped team at SERVPRO of Highland Park has experience managing extreme flood damage after wildfires. We arrive ready to “dig in” and transform your home back to preloss condition after one call to (323) 255-1001.

SERVPRO Can Restore Most Highland Park Homes After A Flood

Any amount of water can cause problems for a Highland Park area home. Flooding from outside is far worse than a split inlet pipe, however. The water entering your home contains soil, pesticides, animal waste, and many more types of contaminants which can be just as or more damaging than the water itself.

What do you remove first?

Regardless of the source of the flooding, SERVPRO removes the water as quickly as the situation allows. Flood damage in Highland Park homes means our technicians have to start within minutes after arriving on site. That is why we gather as much information as possible from you, including smartphone pictures, before departing our offices.

How does your team get started?

We begin with a quick inspection to determine the physical risks. If there is even a hint of a biological threat, team members put on the appropriate PPE, then spray the water and any affected surfaces with an anti-bacterial agent to neutralize the problem. After that, technicians bring in the pumps and other equipment needed for immediate water removal.

For deeper flooding in your home, they use commercial-grade water pumps. These devices can draw out water quickly, but if there is a large amount of debris in the water, technicians cover the hoses with a screen and reduce the vacuum speed which can slow removal.

If the water has already started receding, then what is left in your home may only be a small amount that barely covers the floors. For that, technicians use extraction wands and other devices designed for this task. They have more physical control over these smaller machines, and can easily move them from spot to spot, wherever they need to draw water off the surfaces. Technicians also use these for drawing water out of carpets and the pads underneath them.

With the water gone, what happens next?

Debris removal. Team members begin this task as the pumps finish their work. They start with the soil, other contaminants, and any items soaked and ruined by the floodwater. Where possible, technicians use push brooms to clear out small items after putting on gloves and other PPE. With outside flooding, we cannot guarantee the carpet is safe for reuse, so team members quickly dispose of them and the carpet pads.

If the water sat for very long in your home, there is often a decaying or musty odor. Quickly removing the debris helps reduce this odor, reducing the risk that it penetrates deeper into the structure of the home. All debris is deposited into a portable dumpster for removal.

After removing enough debris to examine the structure, an inspector looks at the flooring, trim, and drywall panels. If there is only surface contamination, they clean everything using a strong, anti-bacterial agent. For major damage to the trim and drywall, team members remove it from the structural supports and place them in the dumpster with the other debris.

Can my wood floors be restored?

Cleaning is fairly simple, but fully restoring them depends on how much water the floorboards absorbed. If there was too much, then they begin to swell and buckle, pushing themselves out from between the other floorboards. The individual boards then begin to split and crack from the swelling. If caught quickly enough, our technicians use several devices to help draw out the water, reducing the damage enough to allow them to repair the flooring.

  • Box Fans – Team members set these up at exit points to begin pulling the damp air out of the affected rooms. This lowers the humidity level and helps the next two devices work more efficiently
  • Dehumidifiers – Technicians set these up to draw water out of the air and nearby property. They work without touching the flooring, furniture, and other items, so they cause no secondary damage to the surfaces.
  • Air Movers – Team members direct the airflow of these machines to gentle force warm air across damp surfaces. The action pushes out moisture where it is captured by the dehumidifiers or caught on an air current and pulled out of the area by a box fan.

Is that all?

Not quite; SERVPRO teams can also perform minor furniture repairs, to include stripping and coating wood furniture with new paint or other finishes. We also maintain a complete list of all property we disposed of or restored in our Contents Claim Inventory System (CCIS) for your use and your insurance agency.

For SERVPRO of Highland Park, each home we enter is much more than just a job. As a locally-owned office, every customer is also one of our neighbors. If you need our support and expertise, call (323) 255-1001 to get the ball rolling. We are here for you.

We Recommend you schedule Roof Inspections every once in a while

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

The roof of your Los Angeles home gets asked to endure many types of severe weather and damaging forces throughout its lifetime. While every situation might not cause catastrophic failure to this external defense for your property, even a small puncture from a tree limb or flying debris can be enough to allow substantial runoff and torrential rainfall to pour into your home’s attic space.

While many do not often correlate storm damage in their Los Angeles residence, the better prepared you are for the possibility, the sooner that our professionals can arrive on the scene and get to work on mitigating your loss. The initial advice in this situation is to keep close tabs on the structural integrity of your roof as best as you can. Have this part of your home inspected once or twice a year to determine areas that could become vulnerable and require repairs to avoid flooding or structural failure.

Since this advice often gets regarded in hindsight, you might benefit from understanding how our SERVPRO professionals can make a difference quickly when your home experiences flood damages. Our rapid response team arrives with the full measure of our extraction and drying equipment designed to slow the spread of flood damages throughout the property and remove the excess water in our initial visit to your home.

These same SERVPRO technicians can help to protect your property by providing roof tarping or emergency board-up services to stop the flow of water into your house. Once the source has stopped supplying water to the affected areas, our professionals can get to work quickly on assessing structural concerns and removing at-risk contents of the house to prevent irreparable damages.

When you contend with flooding in your home from a damaged roof, you need assurances that a team of qualified professionals can arrive quickly to keep the problem from worsening and beginning the necessary steps to restore what has happened. Commercial Structure Awareness

12/23/2019 (Permalink)

When commercial business owners think about water damage, they often picture storms and natural disasters wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. While it is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water coming from weather events and storms, that is not the only cause.

Many businesses on commercial property forget that damage can come from other internal issues as well. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work with fire protection systems. While these sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Highland Park will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime at 323.255.1000
